Protestors Say No to Nunes, Yes to Lisa Brown

Jeremy Burnham/SPR

Devin Nunes was in town today. The California congressman who chairs the House Intelligence Committee was in Spokane to raise money for Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Outside the venue, a group of protestors rallied for McMorris Rodgers’ opponent.

More than 100 people marched in the hot sun in support of Democratic congressional candidate Lisa Brown. Cynthia Hamilton was one of them.

“Today we are protesting Devin Nunes, a chairman of the intelligence committee of the United States Congress,” Hamilton said. “He is here raising money for CMR [Cathy McMorris Rodgers]. He is discredited, and he is under investigation for campaign finances.”

Hamilton is referring to a Federal Election Committee investigation over three donations made to Nunez’s campaign for re-election this year.

Nunes recused himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the US election after a trip to the White House in 2017.

Hamilton says the rally was attended by Democrats and others who are unhappy with President Trump’s policies, and McMorris Rodgers’ support of those policies.

"Nobody wants to believe that their president is a traitor,” Hamilton said. “But all the behavior would indicate that it is true. So we have to protect ourselves. I’m a Vet. I took an oath that said to protect this country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I never thought… I never thought...”

Reporters were not allowed into the event.

Nunes released a statement last week saying he would be in Spokane to “help ensure my friend Cathy McMorris Rodgers gets re-elected.” In the statement he calls McMorris Rodgers a strong conservative voice.
