Smithsonian Institute Says BeauSoleil's Cajun Sound Envelops The Heart of Americana Culture

Fiddler and vocalist Michael Doucet’s Louisiana band entertained with their "gumbo" of zydeco, western swing, calypso, blues, and traditional New Orleans jazz. Now in their 42nd year, BeauSoleil has performed in all 50 states and 33 countries and have released over two dozen albums. In 1997, BeauSoleil’s “L’Amour Ou la Folie” became the first Cajun record to win a Grammy. They were a frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and he calls BeauSoleil “the best Cajun band in the world.”

Born near Lafayette in 1951, Michael Doucet grew up with a variety of musical influences and started playing music at the age of 6. In addition to violin and vocals, Doucet also plays guitar, mandolin and accordion. Doucet is acclaimed for his innovative approach to Cajun music which has brought the traditional genre new relevance. Doucet received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, recognizing artistic excellence, cultural authenticity and an artist's contributions. This is the highest honor in U.S. folk and traditional arts.
