From the Studio: CDA Symphony Young Artist Competition Winners

Today we put our nice new performance studio to the test with the seven winners of the Coeur d'Alene Symphony Young Artist Competition.  We had a wide range of winners--including two pianists, two vocalists, and two violinists, and a flutist--play a wide range of repertoire.  Verne talked with each one of them following a short performance.  These winners will be performing with the Coeur d'Alene Symphony tonight (Friday, March 11th) at 7:30pm and tomorrow (Saturday, March 12th) at 2:00pm at the KROC center.

Sarah Cooper (soprano) will sing "V'Adoro Pupil" from Julius Caesar by G.F. Handel and "Padre germani! Addio" from Idomeneo by W.A. Mozart with the CDA Symphony. Here she sings "Sure on this Shining Night" by Samuel Barber.

Edison Tsai (piano) will play the 1st movement from Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto. Today, he played the 1st movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata, op. 110.

Tasha Koontz (soprano) will sing "E Strano" from La Traviata by Verdi. Here she sings "Non Midir" from Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Brenda Miller (piano) will play the 3rd movement from Camille Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2. Today, she played L'Isle Joyeuse by Claude Debussy.

Laura Pillman (flute) will play the 3rd movement from the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Jacques Ibert. Here she plays Syrinx for solo flute by Claude Debussy.

Sarah Hall (violin) will play the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saens. In the studio she played the 1st movement from Bela Bartok's Sonata for Solo Violin.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
