Washington Fish and Wildlife leaders are holding a public information meeting to discuss their efforts to deal with problem wolves in the state. Fish and Wildlife managers plan a public meeting in Colville next week to explain some of their actions in light of recent wolf attacks.

The Huckleberry pack in Stevens County was blamed last month for the death of over 20 sheep. WDFW officials killed one of those wolves from the air, but Fish and Wildlife manager Steve Pozzanghera says his agency came under fire when they did not kill more.

Pozzanghera: “So after we initiated the lethal removal using the helicopter, it served as a an effective hazing tool, and our understanding was the pack moved on to the reservation, and we did not have access to the animals after they moved on to the reservation.”

Pozzanghera says since then, a cow and calf have also been killed by the Profanity Peak pack, in the Curlew area. The agency wants an opportunity to explain their efforts to share radio collar tracking information with the public, and the specifics of the state Wolf management plan that they are operating under.

At the meeting they plan a brief presentation, then a Q and A session on that presentation, followed by open testimony from the audience. The event will take place Tuesday, October 7th, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and the Colville Ag Trade center at the Northeast Washington fairgrounds.

Steve was part of the Spokane Public Radio family for many years before he came on air in 1999. His wife, Laurie, produced Radio Ethiopia in the late 1980s through the '90s, and Steve used to “lurk in the shadowy world” of Weekend SPR. Steve has done various on air shifts at the station, including nearly 15 years as the local Morning Edition host. Currently, he is the voice of local weather and news during All Things Considerd, writing, editing, producing and/or delivering newscasts and features for both KPBX and KSFC. Aside from SPR, Steve ,who lives in the country, enjoys gardening, chickens, playing and listening to music, astronomy, photography, sports cars and camping.
