The Guru's Guide to Proper R&V Sale Donations

How and what to give to the KPBX Recordings & Videos Sale

Another year has come and gone and, hopefully, the holidays were good to all of us. Now is the time to start thinking about cleaning out the extra stuff we don’t use any longer, and making donations to worthy causes (like Spokane Public Radio). For you music lovers, it also is time to consider donating to SPR’s February fundraiser: the KPBX Recordings and Videos Sale. If you aren’t listening to some of your records, compact discs, or tapes any more, or using your old equipment any longer, the R&V Sale is a great way to give your music items a new home, which supports Spokane Public Radio too. The following is a guide to what the station looks for in donated items so that we have a successful sale the weekend of February 18 and 19.

As with all donations, please keep in mind how you would like to find the items if you were purchasing them for yourself.

1. Records
  • ALL LP records should have matching covers and discs; inner sleeves (especially those containing lyrics or notes) should be included as well. Records should be in good shape and free from warps or other defects that could hinder play.
  • 78 and 45 rpm records will be accepted without jackets but should be in reasonably good shape.
  • Record sets like the Reader’s Digest or Time/Life series, full length operas, or major classical works should have all books and sleeves so that a complete set may be enjoyed. All records and books should be in the slipcases.

2. Tape Formats
  • Commercial reel-to-reel tape albums should be in the box with all reels included (if multiple sets). (Please note any broken or spliced reels so that we may repair them.)
  • Commercial Cassette tapes should also have all tapes and notes, a complete case for storage and not be subjected to extremes of use; i.e. inability to read the cassette label.
  • Commercial 8-track tape cartridges should be playable. Storage sleeves, if possible, should also be included (the paper sleeve it came in).

3. Compact Discs
  • All compact discs are subject to the above criteria for LPs. Make sure all the notes as well as labels for cases (front/back) are included.
  • CD Box Sets should have all the CDs and books and all additional material.
  • CD cases, if broken, should be noted so we can replace these. (The station has a limited number of cases available).
  • Anything that is loose can be rubber banded to keep together.
  • Absolutely no home recorded CD-R copies, cassettes, or video tapes will be accepted for the sale due to copyright infringement laws.

4. Video Tapes/DVDs
  • We accept commercial VHS as well as beta videotape formats. We also accept commercial DVDs. Please be sure all notes etc. are included.
  • Preferably all videos will be in original sleeves or boxes. All DVDs, especially sets, should be in cases.

5. Equipment

Classic audio equipment (receivers, amps, tuners, tape decks, turntables) should have the original owner manuals (if possible). The station does look at taking jukeboxes in good working condition. An idea of when the pieces were last used will help our technician. All classic equipment will be tested to be sure it is fully operational.

6. Accessories
  • Small accessories should be taped together.
  • Wood cassette cabinets should have all feet, legs, etc., or be attached to unit.
  • If larger cabinets/consoles are being donated, please call our front desk for drop off information.

7. Blank Tapes
  • All blank reel-to-reel tape will be accepted and will be bulk erased before being offered for sale.
  • Home cassette tapes and video tapes will not be accepted for sale due to copyright infringement. However, if sealed blank tape of any format I video/audio) is brought in, these will be sold in limited amounts.

8. Computer Software
  • Due to changing software needs, we cannot accept software of any kind.

9. Music Related Items
  • All sheet music, books/magazines on music, audio magazines, computer books, and smaller instruments (recorders, etc.) will be accepted.
  • Pianos and other large instruments cannot be accepted. Please call the station if you are unsure about your item.

10. Donation Day – Saturday, February 4, 2012, 10am to 3pm
  • We depend on donations from our listeners and friends to make the KPBX Recordings & Videos Sale possible. To make things easier, the station holds a Donation Day one Saturday, February 4, to receive bulk donations from our listeners. Stop by and talk to me, Bill, the R&V Guru, meet the staff, see the station, and even grab a cup of Craven’s coffee. Further details about Donation Day will be announced on air.
  • Or, bring your items by the station weekdays during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm, up to one week before the sale.

11. Other Considerations
  • If a large donation is being brought in, please call the station and talk to one of our friendly receptionists (Martha or Mary) and they will be happy to make arrangements for you to drop off the donation at street level rather than trying to bring it upstairs. Small donations (bag or box) can still be brought to the lobby.
  • We also ask that if you anticipate donation of a larger item such as a stereo console or a record cabinet that you call and talk to the staff to make arrangements. Again, please be sure any equipment is working before donation.
  • If you live in the Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint areas, or Cheney, we have friendly business partners that are happy to take your small donations (please check with them before you bring the donations in). Contact The Long Ear in Cd’A and Bicycle Time In Cheney to check on their store hours. We appreciate their on-going support of the station and the sale.
  • Extended! Our last day to receive donations is February 9, 2012.This will allow Guru Bill to pack everything properly and have it ready for the moving company.

  • If you have any questions as to item suitability, please call Kathy Sackett or Stephanie Ingoldby (you can talk to Stephanie about volunteering too). The station’s phone number is 328-5729 and 1-800-328-5729 (toll free).

  • We look forward to another successful sale and appreciate all of our listeners and donator support.
