Canadian Officials Confirm Climbers' Bodies Recovered

Parks Canada

Canadian parks officials have confirmed the body of Spokane mountain climber Jess Roskelley and two fellow climbers have been recovered.

During a conference call with reporters Monday, Brian Webster from Parks Canada shared the timeline of the search for the three men: Roskelley, David Lama and Hansjorg Auer. He said they were climbing Howse Peak in Banff National Park in Alberta last week.

“The party started the climb on the morning of Tuesday, April 16. They summited approximately at noon and then they were descending that afternoon when the accident occurred," Webster said.

When they hadn’t returned by the next day, rescue teams started a search, but for the next few days, weather and dangerous avalanche conditions limited them, both in the air and on the ground.

Finally, Parks Canada incident commander Shelley Humphries says, on Sunday, rescue teams brought in a trained avalanche dog with its handler.

“The avalanche dog searched the area and was able to locate the climbers. The recovery team deployed to the location successfully recovered the three individuals," Humphries said.

She says the three men were all experienced climbers.
