CDA Marathon Finds Way To Stage Its Race This Year

CDA Marathon/Negative Split

The coronavirus is forcing event organizers to find new ways to stage their events.

The Coeur d’Alene Marathon will take place as usual later this month.

But race director Ryan Hite says what is normally a one-day event has been extended to three days, August 21 through 23.

“There’s not going to be a big after party. There’s not going to be a beer garden," Hite said. "We’re taking all the fanfare out of it and making it purely a race course, which we believe is, and we’re told by the health department, that running out on trails is still a very safe thing to do at this time.”

Runners will be assigned times to come to McEuen Park to start their run. People can choose one of four options: marathon, half marathon, 10-or-five kilometers. They’ll be running trails in and around Coeur d’Alene, including the Centennial Trail.

The race was originally scheduled in May. Hite says his office has kept in contact with people as it waited to see whether it could hold the event.

“A lot of our communication will surround safety with the event. We also have an app that we’re using this year for the runners so they’ll have an app and be able to get live alerts from the race company as well," he said.

Hite says there may still be a few spots open in the race. The field will be limited to about 1,600 runners.
