Crews Continue The Attack Against Eastern Washington Wildfires

Eastern Area Incident Management Team

UPDATED Wednesday at 5:30 pm

Two wildfires that we have been following continue to burn today.

The Silver Lake Fire three miles from Cheney is now burning at 330 acres. That is up from the 100 acres previously reported. Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Guy Gifford said that increase is mostly due to better mapping of the fire.

The fire did increase by 30 acres, but that involves burning between the two spot fires that make up the Silver Lake Fire.

All level three evacuations have been reduced to level two, which means the affected people are asked to be ready to leave if necessary.

Gifford says people need to be aware that in this dry, hot weather, it doesn’t take much to start a fire.

”Any spark can start a fire," said Gifford. "It could be from your vehicle, it could be from your lawn mower or weed eater out in the dry grass. You have to be very careful if you are doing anything in the dry grass, because if it sparks, it can start the next fire.”

Meanwhile, crews continue to fight the Angel Spring Fire near Davenport.

Walter Kowalski, spokesperson for the incident management team assigned to the area, says the fire is currently burning at 5,000 acres.

All level three evacuations have been lowered to level two.

Kowalski says 14 buildings have been destroyed, including four residences. No one was in any of the residences.

Kowalski says crews have used the last few days to get ahead of the weather.

“Crews are working tirelessly in the heat and very dry weather to get as much work done as possible before the windy weather comes into the area over the next few days," said Kowalski  "The crews have worked very hard and we feel confident in the containment lines we have at this point.”

There have been no injuries in either of the fires.
