Domestic Violence Survivors Have New Support At YWCA

Victims of domestic violence in Spokane now have a warm, family friendly center where they can get help. Thursday, city leaders opened a new Family Justice Center in the YWCA building.

A coalition called the Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Team has worked together for the past dozen years to help domestic violence victims. It includes the YWCA, law enforcement, victim’s advocates, and prosecutors, and victims can now access all of these parties in one spot. YWCA CEO Regina Malveaux says they want victims to feel comfortable.

Malveaux: “You know there tends to be some discomfort or fear around walking into a police department or walking into the prosecutor’s office. Where as if a victim comes here to the YWCA which is already very much known for being a victim’s services location.”

The purpose of the Family Justice Center will be to offer services to victims of family violence. Funding is provided through all parties involved. Malveaux says there are about 20 similar centers in the US.
