Investigation Continues On Officer-Involved Shooting In Spokane

Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl this afternoon [Tuesday] issued a statement related to last night’s fatal officer-involved shooting last night in north central Spokane.

Meidl says people in the area of 600 West Montgomery reported hearing shots around 10:30 pm. He says someone who called 9-1-1 reported a neighbor was shooting at them. Officers who responded reported seeing the suspect holding a long object, perhaps a rifle. Shots were fired. The suspect ran back into his house. Officers asked neighbors to evacuate or take cover until they figured out the status of the suspect. Officers used an armored vehicle as they approached his house and saw the man inside injured. Medics from the fire department went inside, but the man was pronounced dead.

In his statement, Meidl said investigators haven’t yet found a gun in the home, but says they did find a baseball bat. He says the followup investigation will review the video from the body cameras of the officers involved and look for any other footage captured by nearby cameras.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s office is leading the investigation. The man’s name hasn’t yet been released, nor have the names of the officers involved in the incident.
