WHER: 1000 Beautiful Watts

WHER, the first all-girl radio station in the nation, went on the air in Memphis on October 29, 1955. It was the brainchild of sound legend Sam Phillips, who created the groundbreaking format with money he raised from selling Elvis Presley's Sun Studios contract.

Women almost exclusively ran WHER. On the air they read the news, interviewed local celebrities, and spun popular records. Behind the scenes they sold and created commercials, produced and directed programming and sat at the station's control boards.

Intelligence Squared U.S. - Is the Two-Party System Good for Democracy?

As the nation gears up for the 2020 presidential election, we ask: Is the two-party system good for democracy? Featuring moderator John Donvan with Joanne B. Freeman, Yascha Mounk, Norman Ornstein, Lee Drutman, and Katherine Gehl.

Witness: Women's History Month Special

The BBC World Service presents remarkable stories of women's history, told by the women who were there. Hear moving, inspiring and even outrageous stories about a few of the most important women in living memory.  These include stories about Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mustique, the first self-made female millionaire Madame CJ Walker, the invention of the sports bra, the rise of Angela Merkel, the murder of outspoken Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, and the rural women’s movement of South Africa.

Brian is a Spokane native who has been interested in sound technology ever since playing with a reel-to-reel deck as a kid. He learned radio broadcasting on KSFC, before it was part of Spokane Public Radio but still was part of the broadcasting program at Spokane Falls Community College. Brian also studied radio at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon, where he featured new age and fusion jazz on his own show. He admits that at heart he is a news junkie, which fits in well with his work Saturday mornings as regional host for NPR's Morning Edition.
