The intense heat we’ll experience during the next several days may elevate the risk of wildfires, but forecasters don’t expect winds to be much of a factor in pushing smoke around the region.The Northwest Interagency Fire Center says there are a handful of fires burning in Oregon and Idaho, including a small one burning in north Idaho.
National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Bodnar says their smoke has, so far, stayed close to the sources.
“Starting Friday we will start to see a little bit of wind coming out of the northeast, so we may see some of that smoke from north Idaho coming this way, but, overall, we don’t see a lot of wildfire smoke blanketing the area. Most of the pollutants in the airshed should just be dust, along those lines," he said.
As for the question of whether Spokane will break its all-time recorded high temperature of 108, Bodnar says, as of Wednesday, there’s a 50-50 chance.
