Moviegoers in the Bing experience Kubrick's vision as he intended -- the big screen and surround sound.

SPR and Friends of the Bing presented Stanley Kubrick's classic science-fiction film 2001 on June 17 as part of the SPR Goes to the Movies series.

The evening began at 6 p.m. with Movies 101 hosts Dan Webster, Mary Pat Treuthart, and Nathan Weinbender discussing director Stanley Kubrik's films. That program will air Friday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. on KPBX, and Saturday, July 18 at 1 p.m. on KSFC.

2001: A Space Odyssey was listed by the American Film Institute as the best science fiction film of all time and was nominated for four Academy Awards. Kubrick won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Steven Spielberg calls it his film generation's "big bang," while George Lucas says it was "hugely inspirational," labeling Kubrick as "the filmmaker's filmmaker."

Thematically, the film deals with elements of human evolution, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life. It is notable for its scientific accuracy, pioneering special effects, sound in place of traditional narrative techniques, innovative use of classical music, and minimal use of dialogue.

Thanks to event donors the Riverday School and The Cleaning Authority. Presented with Friends of the Bing. Thanks also to the Friends of the Bing, Bing Crosby Theater and staff including Michael Smith, Tony Kacelek, Davis Creekmore, Aaron Spicklemire; host and producer Jim Tevenan, Wildflowers, Event Rents, Hearn Brothers Printing, TicketsWest, Tony Flinn, and the SPR Volunteers.
