Take Back Your Prescription Drugs on Saturday

Drug Enforcement Administration

Federal authorities are reminding people that Saturday will be a good day for them to get rid of their unused prescription drugs. Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Jolie Jentz, a clinical pharmacist for Heritage Health in Coeur d’Alene, says the goal is to remind people to be careful with how they store their prescribed drugs "so that they don’t put them somewhere where it’s possibly either dangerous for other people or contaminating our water supply."

"We used to do a lot of flushing medications down the toilet until we realized that, a lot of times, they end up where it can affect our water supply,” she said.

On Saturday the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls Police Departments will accept unused drugs. In Coeur d’Alene, go to the police department lobby between 10 am and 2 am; in Post Falls, go to city hall between 9 am and 1 pm. In Spokane, you can take drugs to the Walgreens locations on Northwest Boulevard and at 7905 North Division and to Riverpoint Pharmacy at 1802 North Monroe.

There are several locations around the Inland Northwest that accept unused drugs year round. They include, in Kootenai County, the Coeur d’Alene Police and Kootenai County Sheriff’s offices. In Spokane, the police department has bins in the Public Safety Building and its downtown and north precincts. The Spokane Valley Police Department also accepts unused prescriptions.
