Local non-profits are counting on volunteers to finish 117 projects during Spokane Gives Week, which starts Saturday.

The mission of Spokane Gives Week is to connect volunteers with community groups that need a hand. At a news conference this week, organizers said there are about 3,000 volunteers spots listed, most of them unfilled.

If you need motivation to sign up, here’s some from 12 year old Julia McIntyre. She volunteers at the Guilds’ School in honor of her uncle.

McIntyre: “I believe that volunteering is an excellent way to be active in your community, and can be done by people of any age. My uncle Ben who attended the guild school, passed away in December 2009. I decided to raise funds for the Guilds’ School penny drive and volunteer to help the Guilds’ School.”

The school needs volunteers for their penny drive Saturday, and there are 90 other agencies still waiting for helpers to sign up. That includes cleaning the porch at Spokane AIDS Network, picking up trash downtown, spring cleaning at SCRAPS, and meal servers at House of Charity. Spokane Gives Week runs this Saturday through Saturday, May 2nd.

You can sign up at spokanegives.org.
