Construction Crews Renovating SPR Home

Online Donation FormThanks to donations made to the Moving to a Sound Future project, construction has begun on Fire Station No. 3. Less than $948,000 remains to be raised to double working space and triple SPR’s production capacity.

As interior walls came down and carpet came up, forgotten items saw the light of day. Playing cards. A newspaper dated 1982. An Olympia “stubby” bottle. Almost two dozen ping pong balls rained down from a false ceiling. All reminders of the firemen who lived and worked in the building from 1917 until 1991.
“It’s a cool place, knowing I’m part of a project that’s historical. I’m glad it’s being remodeled instead of just torn down,” says Damone Solomon, who joined the Fire Station construction crew last month.
Walker Construction, which renovated the Fox Theatre among other historical projects, has to date removed interior walls, reinforced the brick to meet modern seismic codes, and excavated the base of the elevator. Construction Manager Harvey Morrison says the renovation is on schedule; KPBX, KSFC, and KPBZ will be moved in and operating in the new space by the end of June 2015.
Demolition and environmental abatements are complete and the project has passed its historical preservation reviews. Now the actual ‘remodeling’ can begin to build SPR’s new and improved broadcast home.
Private tours are welcome, and can be arranged by calling SPR at 328-5729 or (800) 328-5729.
