Spokane County Fire District 9

A Spokane County firefighter was died after he was wounded fighting a brush fire Thursday. 

According to a release from Spokane County Fire District 9 Fire Chief Jack Cates, the fire fighter Cody Traber was an 18-year-veteran of the department.

He previously served Stevens County Fire District 1, the Cheney Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources Arcadia District.

He leaves behind his wife and four children.

Department of Natural Resource lands will be closed to the public from Friday until further notice due to the growing danger of wildfires.

Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency Tuesday due to wildfires.

According to a press release, Inslee’s proclamation bans most outdoor and agricultural burning until the end of September.

Fire Danger To Increase Tuesday Night, Wednesday

The National Weather Center is warning of extreme fire danger Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Lightning storms, dry conditions and winds are expected to combine Tuesday evening and Wednesday, priming Eastern Washington and North Idaho for wildfires.

Wildfire aid for Malden was held up by the White House for four months. A new  bill introduced by Cathy McMorris Rodgers could change that.

Here’s an excerpt of a video the congresswoman posted to her website.

“The Malden Act would do three main things – First It requires the president to approve or deny a disaster declaration within 30 days. If the request is not denied within 30 days, it is approved.”

It would also would require FEMA to provide resources to local emergency managers to help with their recovery and prepare them for other future emergencies.

Didn’t we just finish with an election? One in which the people elected congressional members and governors and state legislators and decided initiatives?

Now we’re back at it, at least in Spokane County, with five measures on the February 12 ballot. All but one pertain to property tax levies for fire and/or police services. [The Orchard Prairie School District is also running a property tax levy.]

Today, we’ll consider three of those measures, in the city of Spokane, in the Spokane Valley Fire District and Fire District 8.

Spokane Voters To Decide Fire/Police Tax Ballot Measure

Voters in the city of Spokane will be asked next year to approve a property tax increase to pay for more police officers, firefighters and crime prevention programs.

The city council voted Monday night to put the measure to a special election on February 13.

Fire Districts Collaborate to Speed Up Response Time

Firefighters will respond faster to fires and medical emergencies thanks to a new countywide collaboration. Fire departments representing Spokane, Spokane Valley, and county districts 8 and 9 will serve across borders.

Even before fireworks went on sale for the 4th, conditions were ripe for wildfires in the Inland Northwest  - exceedingly dry vegetation, including parched and already browning grass, trees stressed by lack of moisture and beetles, and shrubs that can instantly turn to kindling.

Sheriff Expects Arrest in Triple Homicide in Chattaroy

The Deer Park community, local firefighters, and Spokane’s comedy scene are mourning the deaths of three people by homicide. The Spokane County Sheriff says investigators have found good evidence in the homicide and house fire that happened Tuesday, but have not arrested a suspect.

The crash of a helicopter in the Colville National Forest has resulted in an early season forest fire. The chopper was working near Pierre Lake when it went down Thursday afternoon.

A recent house fire in Spokane has brought to light the dangers of electric baseboard and space heaters. The Spokane Fire Department says a 97-year-old woman died in a fire in October, caused by a suitcase lighting on fire from the baseboard heater.
