The state of Idaho is soliciting proposals for projects that would lower the phosphorus level in Coeur d’Alene Lake.

Idaho state officials say they want to move quickly on projects that reduce phosphorus pollution in Lake Coeur d’Alene. Phosphorus promotes the growth of plants that can be toxic to humans and animals.

An advisory committee appointed by the governor to vet and choose proposals began its work Thursday in Coeur d’Alene.

With the arrival of hot weather Spokane county officials are now banning most open fires.


It's been a long time coming, but with temperatures in the 90s this week.

Officials, such as Spokane Valley Fire Marshal Greg Rogers, say it's time for a ban on many types of outdoor burning.

For years, Idaho’s Silver Valley has had skies that have failed to meet federal air quality standards. But the air has gradually improved and may soon get an official thumbs up from the government.

For years, pollution belched out of the stack at the Bunker Hill lead smelter. But during the last generation, the real issue has been smoke emitted by wood stoves.

The air in north Idaho’s Silver Valley has gradually improved to the point where it may soon meet federal standards.

“This was a wonderful year for air quality," said Dan Smith, an airshed analyst for the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality in Kellogg.
