Progressive candidates Melissa Bedford and Riley Smith appeared poised to claim seats on the Spokane school board, according to results released Tuesday night.

Bedford, an Eastern Washington University professor, led financial advisor Daryl Geffken 57% to 42%..

Kata Dean and Riley Smith are running for an open seat on the Spokane school board.

Dean is a life coach who has also worked with teenagers, some with drug addiction problems and some who were sexually abused. Smith works for a non-profit that works to distribute produce from regional farmers to food banks in the region.

Voters overwhelmingly backed an Eastern Washington University professor and a financial advisor for an open school board position, narrowing a crowded field. A stay at home mom and operations manager at a food bank pulled ahead in the race for the other open school board seat.
