Spokane City Council Considering Water Fluoridation

Water fluoridation may be in the city of Spokane’s future.

The city council is considering a request by dentists to fluoridate the city’s water supply. The proposal may be added to the council’s agenda as early as next Monday.

Water fluoridation has been proposed – and rejected – before by Spokane residents. Supporters such as Dr. Elisabeth Warder believe it’s time to consider it again.

A local group has formed to try to save 48 acres of farmland in the Vinegar Flats neighborhood in southwest Spokane.

The current owner of a parcel known as the Pilcher property has applied for and received conditional approval for a permit that would allow for 94 homes to be built on land that is zoned agricultural. There are no immediate plans yet to build the development.

Two Incumbents Lead In Spokane City Council Races

Two Spokane city council members are ahead after the first round of ballots have been counted. Lori Kinnear has a big lead over her challenger, Tony Kiepe, in the South district race.

In the Northwest, Karen Stratton leads Andy Rathbun by 400 votes out of 13,000 counted in her quest to win a second term.

Spokane Candidates Discuss Climate Change

Spokane’s mayoral and city council candidates have addressed a wide variety of issues during this fall campaign, from homelessness to land use.

On Wednesday evening, the topic of the day was one that some of the candidates don’t even consider a local issue: climate change.

Spokane Council Races Narrowed To Two Candidates

There are still thousands of ballots still to be counted, but it appears the November general election match ups are pretty much set in three Spokane city council races.

Today on the Inland Journal podcast, the results from Tuesday’s Spokane County election, including the city of Spokane’s mayor’s race and four city council races.
 
We start with the mayor’s race where retired television newscaster Nadine Woodward won the primary, winning more than 42% of the vote. Second place went to city council president Ben Stuckart, with more than 37%.

Spokane City Councilwoman Lori Kinnear posted a solid showing in Tuesday’s primary election.

The one-term council member won 59% of the vote in a three-way race. She’ll face health care consultant Tony Kiepe in the November general election. He won 23% of the vote.

Today on Inland Journal, a special one-hour program with two parts. In the second half hour, Mayor David Condon talks about the city’s criminal justice plans, especially with talks ongoing about a possible new Spokane County jail. And we talk about the state of the city’s infrastructure, with stormwater and streets projects ongoing.

But first, we meet with the three candidates for a city council seat representing south Spokane. Councilwoman Lori Kinnear is running for a second term and she’s challenged by two people.
