Washington's Primary Election Day Is Here

Today [Tuesday] is primary election day in Washington.

The fields will be narrowed for nine statewide offices. There are about 35 candidates for governor and 11 for lieutenant governor, for example. Congressional and legislative seats and county offices are also up for grabs this year.

Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman has rejected a suggestion by President Trump that the U.S. postpone the November election because of security worries.

Wyman says the Constitution makes clear that the presidential term ends at noon on January 20 of the year after the election. She says there’s similar certainty about the end of the congressional term.

Washington voters will narrow the fields in the races for nine statewide elected officials, from governor to state school superintendent. In eight of those races, incumbents are on the ballot.

The outlier is lieutenant governor, where Cyrus Habib is leaving office to enter the Society of Jesus.

Eleven people hope to replace him. Here are thumbnail sketches of the candidates.

Two fire levies are on the August 4 primary election ballot in Spokane County.


In Fire District 10, which covers much of the West Plains, voters are asked to approve a 10-year levy focused on medical services.

Washington’s primary election is two weeks from today [Tuesday], August 4.

There are three candidates in Spokane’s Sixth Legislative District competing for two seats in the November general election. On Monday, we talked with the incumbent, Republican Jenny Graham.

Today, Doug Nadvornick spends a few minutes with one of her two Democratic challengers, Tom McGarry. McGarry is an attorney who specializes in housing issues. He's also an elected commissioner for Spokane County Fire District 9.

On Wednesday, we heard Chris Armitage, one of two Democrats running for Washington’s Fifth District Congressional District. Both are challenging longtime Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

Ballots will go out in the mail today and for the rest of the week for Washington’s August 4 primary election. We’ve been interviewing candidates for the last couple of weeks, all of them so far in the competitive races in Spokane’s Fourth Legislative District.

But today and tomorrow [Wednesday and Thursday] we’ll switch to the two Democrats challenging Cathy McMorris Rodgers for her Fifth District Congressional seat.

Today, we’ll hear from Chris Armitage, a former military police officer who is now running on many of the issues that appeal to progressives in his party.

This week we begin interviewing candidates running for the state House seat that Representative Matt Shea is vacating in the Fourth Legislative District. Technically it’s an open seat, but because of some late maneuvering during candidate filing week, an incumbent, Representative Bob McCaslin, is running for the seat.

One of the candidates in the race is Republican Mike Conrad. Conrad is the CEO of The Savory Butcher, a Post Falls company that sells bulk meat products that its customers order and pick up. The company operates not just in this area, but in several states around the country. We asked Conrad why he’s running for the legislature.

Today [Tuesday] we present the first of four candidates running for a state House seat in Washington’s Fourth Legislative District. It’s the seat now held by Representative Bob McCaslin. McCaslin has switched and is now running for the other seat in the district as part of some late maneuvering in the last few hours of the candidate filing period.

Today we hear from former Spokane County treasurer Rob Chase, who came into 2020 planning to challenge Cathy McMorris Rodgers for her congressional seat.
