Last weekend the Spokane Indians baseball team had its final two home games for the 2021 season cancelled because of Covid concerns with players on the visiting team, the Tri-City Dust Devils.

That was the latest body blow for a team that had a cancelled season in 2020 and, this year, has had to adjust to serving fans in a pandemic-infused world.

But the Indians see some financial support on the horizon if they can only get the attention of Congress.

Tuesday was Opening Day for the Spokane Indians baseball club. That’s a big day in any year, but especially this year because the 2020 minor league season was cancelled.

The Indians are not only adjusting to pandemic-related changes, but also to a radical restructuring of the minor league baseball system.

Thursday, April 1 is opening day for Major League Baseball. The minor league season will begin, for some, on May 4. For many minor league teams, moving forward will be a different experience because of fundamental changes made in the system during the off-season.

The Spokane Indians minor league baseball club welcomed the news about the move to Phase 3 in Washington. It means they’ll have actually have a season with fans in the seats.

The season opens May 4.

The 2021 baseball season is starting to feel like reality for the Spokane Indians minor league baseball club.

It’s been a long time since the team played. The 2020 season was cancelled because of Covid. But on Thursday, Major League Baseball released the team’s schedule.

Since 1983, the Spokane Indians baseball club has played about 70 games a season in the eight-team Northwest League. This season it will play 120, beginning May 4, in the six-team High-A West League.
