Eva Silverstone, Arts Education Specialist at the Spokane Public Library, stopped into the KPBX studio to reflect on the first year of The Hive's operation and talk about how the facility will continue to serve the community in the future.
The Hive is a joint venture between the Spokane Public Library and Spokane Public Schools. Billed as a "non-traditional library," it's a facility where individuals and groups can check out rooms and spaces just like checking out a book or a CD.
Four of the building's spaces are studios reserved for artists-in-residence. In 2021, The Hive hosted six artists-in-residence. This year, that number will rise to around 20. As part of their residency, artists are expected to perform community outreach in the form of free lessons and workshops.
Along with a free studio and facility tour every Wednesday, The Hive hosts free events like writing workshops, craft demos and more. Visit The Hive's website for more info and a list of upcoming events.
