Tour guide and TV travel presenter Rick Steves spoke with Spokane Public Radio's E.J. Iannelli by phone about Art of Europe, his new series for public television.
The six-part, six-hour series covers the entire span of European art history—from the Stone Age to the modern age. It began airing locally on KSPS at the start of October.
In this SPR interview, Rick talks about what got left on the cutting-room floor, which artistic developments he considers most significant, why he was motivated to put his own stamp on art history and how nudity in art can remain such a sticking point for TV audiences.
The series begins in prehistoric Europe, Egypt and ancient Greece before moving on to ancient Rome, medieval Europe, the Renaissance, the Baroque period and the Age of Revolution, finally closing with the modern era.
As part of the century-sweeping tour, Steves profiles masterpieces of painting, music, sculpture and architecture.
