Next legislative session many Washington lawmakers hope to address public safety by rewriting the state’s drug possession law or rolling back some police reforms.

Spokane Valley Senator Mike Padden has in the past proposed, unsuccessfully, to make possessing drugs a felony. He hopes the legislature will take a second look.

Padden is the ranking Republican on the Washington Senate Law and Justice Committee. He spoke with Spokane Public Radio’s Rebecca White about potential public safety and housing policies lawmakers may consider next session.

Spokane Public Radio’s conversation is one of a series on the upcoming session. Stay tuned this week to hear from several lawmakers who represent eastern Washington.

The new legislative session kicks off on January 9.
