Evacuation Ordered For 250-Acre Fire Outside Cheney

Firefighters worked overnight to contain a wildfire burning near Cheney.

As of Monday evening, the Andrus Road fire had charred more than 250 acres, according to a tweet from Washington State Patrol Jeff Sevigney. It’s burning near the Marshall Cemetery. Planes dropped water on the fire during daylight on Monday. Firefighters from several Spokane area fire districts are manning the lines.

Emergency responders urged people who live near the so-called Andrus fire to evacuate. Some left. The Red Cross set up a shelter at nearby Medical Lake High School.

According to the Washington State Fire Marshal’s office, the fire began around 11 a-m on Monday. It has burned farm land and was threatening infrastructure and Interstate 90.

Its cause is being investigated.
