Spokane City Council Considers Library and Recreational Facility Bond Issues

Jeremy Burnham/SPR

The Spokane City Council will decide tonight whether to put two bond issues on the November ballot.

Council President Ben Stuckart says the first measure will provide $77 million for important upgrades to the city’s libraries.

“In collaboration with the schools as well, we will be doubling the size of the Shadle Park library, updating the South Hill library, updating the downtown library and making the first-floor space more useable to the public,” Stuckart said.

Stuckart says funding would also allow construction of a new library at Liberty Park, as well as several new library kiosk locations in underserved parts of Spokane.

The second measure would provide funding for recreational facilities. Stuckart says it would allow voters to decide whether to rebuild Joe Albi Stadium at its current site, or downtown. The bill would also provide funding for the Dwight Merkel athletic complex and Spokane parks.

“We would get six new fields out at Dwight Merkel and it would also put around $15-18 million into our neighborhood park systems,” Stuckart said.

If approved by the city council, the measures would be put to the voters in a special election on Nov. 6.
