And now, many of those refugees are heading for Europe.  Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has been both lauded and vilified for offering to absorb nearly a million refugees, and many have asked whether Germany and the EU as a whole can properly support and assimilate so many.  In this special hour of America Abroad, we bring together audiences and experts in New York and Berlin, Germany to discuss the refugee crisis and what it means for Europe.

BBC Special –
Lost Children of the Holocaust

Following the end of the Second World War, the BBC began a series of special radio appeals on behalf of a group of children who'd survived the Holocaust but were now stranded in post-war Europe. They'd lost their families in the genocide but they believed they might have relatives in Britain. 70 years on, Alex Last decided to try to find out what had happened to the children. Were any of them still alive? Did anyone come to their rescue? Did they find their relatives? The search took months and took him to Germany, Israel and the United States, as he traced the survivors. We hear an extraordinary story of courage and humanity born out of the worst atrocity of the 20th Century.

Brian is a Spokane native who has been interested in sound technology ever since playing with a reel-to-reel deck as a kid. He learned radio broadcasting on KSFC, before it was part of Spokane Public Radio but still was part of the broadcasting program at Spokane Falls Community College. Brian also studied radio at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon, where he featured new age and fusion jazz on his own show. He admits that at heart he is a news junkie, which fits in well with his work Saturday mornings as regional host for NPR's Morning Edition.
