The library is housing more than books this summer. Spokane’s downtown branch has partnered with Mobius to be a temporary home for the Mobius Science Center. At the opening this week, the library wasn’t its traditional quiet.
The library is hosting the science center on its third floor, with a big space full of games, engineering tools, and wide-eyed lizards. Mobius operates the science center and a children’s museum that’s in River Park Square. The science center is eventually moving to the old Washington Water Power building, so in the meantime, Mobius and the library formed a partnership to keep it alive.
Lindsey: “It’s not only going to be about the ability to provide a hands on learning experience for people but it’s to provide them access post that experience to the information that this library has.”
Mobius CEO Phil Lindsey says STEM – science, technology, engineering, and math – is valued by both organizations. And library spokesperson Eva Silverstone promises there are still quiet places in the library.
Silverstone: “As the library we’re really excited to have it here because it just fits in with our mission of STEM learning and just ways to learn about your world.”
While the center is at the library, admission is by donation. Silvertone says once Mobius moves they plan to use the vacant space for exhibits or maker-spaces for collaborative projects.
