WSU Edible Book Festival Celebrates Books, Food

Today (Friday) in Pullman, Washington State University’s libraries held their second annual Edible Book Festival. It’s not a celebration where people eat books, but it is a way to use food to draw attention to great books and authors. The celebration is not unique, says Nella Letizia from W-S-U Libraries.

“This all started with the International Edible Food Festival that was started in 2000," Letizia said.

It’s a recent addition to Mom’s Weekend on the Pullman campus. Entrants make something edible that’s in the spirit of their favorite book, whether it be a theme or an author or something else. A celebrity panel judges the entries and picks the winners.

We don’t have the names of this year’s winners, but we have last year’s list. They include an entry named “Berry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Scone.” (by Erica Nicol) It’s ok to groan at that one.

And there was an entrant (Trevor Bond) who celebrated French author Marcel Proust and his love for the cookie we know as a madeleine.

“He had this pan in the kitchen to make these madeleines that had never been used. But he volunteered to make them for his daughter’s French class and ever since that time, from four years ago to the present now, he’s been obsessed with making them,” Letizia said.

Photos were taken of the winning entries. They’ll be sent to the website for the International Edible Food Festival.
