Voters Narrow Spokane County Municipal Races

Here are the August 3 primary election results from the municipal races in Spokane County.

In the city of Spokane's Northwest district, former state legislative candidate Zack Zappone won a five-way race. He'll face Spokane hamburger restaurant owner Mike Lish in the November general election. The winner will replace Candace Mumm, who is ineligible to run for a third term.

In the Northeast, small business owner Jonathan Bingle won a three-way race. Former city council candidate Naghmana Sherazi has a narrow lead over Luc Jasmin III for the second spot in the general election.

In the South, incumbent Councilwoman Betsy Wilkerson and challenger Tyler LeMasters were the only two candidates in the race and so their names did not appear on the August ballot.

NW: Zack Zappone…43%; Mike Lish…29%; Karen Kearney…11.7%; Lacrecia (Lu) Hill…11.6%; Christopher Savage…4.4%

NE: Jonathan Bingle…46.9%; Naghmana Sherazi…26.6%; Luc Jasmin III…25.8%

South: Betsy Wilkerson will face Tyler LeMasters (no primary)

In Spokane Valley, two of the three incumbents running for re-election won their primary elections. Councilman Ben Wick, who currently serves as mayor, easily won the right to run for another term. He'll face Brandon Fenton in the November election. Councilwoman Pam Haley also won her primary. She'll face another Fenton, Wayne Fenton, in November. A third incumbent, Linda Thompson, is running a few points behind Laura Padden in their four-way primary. Padden is the wife of Spokane Valley state Senator Mike Padden.

Pos. 4: Ben Wick, incumbent…59.9%; Brandon Fenton: 28.9%; Christopher Ingraham…5.4%; Mark McManus…5.2%

Pos. 5: Pam Haley, incumbent…47.7%; Wayne Fenton…24.6%; Pat Stretch…13.9%; Mary K. Butler-Stonewall…13.2%

Pos. 7: Linda Thompson, incumbent…36.2%; Laura Padden…40.7%; Adam Smith…16.1%; Renault Patrick Evans…6.5%

In the city of Cheney, Jacquelyn Belock and Mark Posthuma are the top two candidates in the race for an open council seat.

Pos. 3: open seat: Jacquelyn Belock…37.6%; Mark Posthuma…27.1%; Justin Amyot…14.1%; Ryan Delaney…10.5%; Tim Gainer…9.8%

And in the city of Deer Park, Mayor Tim Verzal has a three-to-one margin in his race for re-election. He will face Hazel McGillivray in the November general election. Of the two candidates running to keep their seats, one is in a tie and the second is in danger of not making the cut. Incumbent Richard Schut and challenger Heather Newsom each have 325 votes after the first count of ballots. In the other race, incumbent Mary Babb is running third, behind Jason Upchurch and Billy Costello.

Mayor: Tim Verzal, incumbent…72.6%; Hazel McGillivray…24.1%; Hargis Adams…1.8%

Pos. 1: Mary Babb, incumbent…23.7%; Jason Upchurch…39.3%; Billy Costello…26%; Henry Lever…8.6%

Pos. 3: Richard Schut, incumbent…41.9%; Heather Newsom…41.9%…each 325 votes; Mike Achurra…12.4%
