Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence

Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence

This traveling exhibition from South Africa tells a story of creativity, independence and memory.

It features a new form of bead art, ndwango (meaning "cloth"), that is worked on fabric using glass beads from the Czech Republic. The complex beadwork transforms the flat black cloth into a contemporary art form with remarkable visual depth.

Ubuhle means "beautiful" in the Xhosa and Zulu languages, and aptly describes the artwork of this collective that was started in 1999 to create employment opportunities and financial independence for rural women.

Tickets may be purchased at the Visitor Services desk inside the main entrance of the museum.
