KPBX Kids' Concert: The Zonky Jazz Band, Saturday January 25

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy The Zonky Jazz band! We had a blast dancing to the music in the beautful St. John's Cathedral. Spokane Public Radio would like to thank everyone involved in this KPBX Kids’ Concert.

Thanks to: St. John’s Cathedral and their Dean, The Very Reverend Heather VanDeventer and colleagues; The Zonky Jazz Band and their leader Garrin Hertel; Event donors: Numerica Credit Union, Harvard Park Children's Learning Center North and Rocket Bakeries; A grant from the Johnston-Fix Foundation; Hearn Brothers Printing; and Spokane Public Radio volunteers and members.

On January 25 music from the Jazz Age, the Roaring 20’s to WWII, will be performed by The Zonky Jazz Band, led by guitarist Garrin Hertel at St. John’s Cathedral. The concert is free, open to the public, and fun for all ages. The music and merriment will start at 1 p.m.

"Zonky" is a late-1920s song by Fats Waller and Andy Razaf that's all about a dance and a party where people "shake their feet aplenty" and "let their feelings run wild." The Zonky Jazz Band performs songs with this spirit of rhythm and fun.

The Zonky Jazz Band is a community of jazz musicians in Spokane, WA that loves to play hot jazz and swing from the 1920s to the 1940s. In addition to Fats Waller, they love performing the music of Louis Armstrong, the Benny Goodman Sextet, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and our hometown heroes, Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey, and Al Rinker.
They've been playing together in various combos since 2007, including as members of Hot Club of Spokane and 6' Swing. Recently they've performed at The Bing Crosby 14th Annual Film Festival, The Bartlett, Ella's Supper Club, and other venues. Today, they would bet a dime against a donut that any time you hear The Zonky, you will want it to stay!

This KPBX Kids' Concert is free, open to the public, and begins at 1 p.m. at St John's Cathedral, 127 E 12th Ave, Spokane.
