Idaho Initiative Campaign To Resume Monday After Court Challenge

DocuSign

An Idaho group sponsoring a school funding initiative says it will resume collecting signatures today [Monday].

A federal judge in Boise ruled Reclaim Idaho will have 48 days to gather the signatures it needs to place the measure on the November ballot. That after the group successfully argued the state refused to extend the window for signature gathering that was interrupted in mid-March by coronavirus restrictions.

The state took the case to a federal appeals court, which also ruled the campaign could begin. Now, Reclaim Idaho says it has learned the state will appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Now we’re just working on setting up our Docusign system for collecting electronic signatures. It’s fairly simple but we still have to put some finishing touches on it," said Luke Mayville from Reclaim Idaho, who says the organization needs the signatures of about 30,000 voters by late August to qualify the measure for the ballot.

The initiative would require the state to spend another $170 million for public schools. It calls for an increase in income taxes for corporations and people who make more than a quarter-of-a-million dollars a year.
