One Drink On The House For Vaccinated Patrons In Washington

Washington’s Liquor and Cannabis Board has announced a new step aimed at helping the hospitality industry while also promoting Covid vaccinations.

The board announced on Monday that it’s allowing restaurants and bars the option of serving one no-cost alcoholic drink on-site to customers if those customers can prove they’ve received a Covid vaccination.

It’s part of the agency’s strategy to waive some state rules for a year or two to benefit food and beverage providers that have been hurt by the pandemic.

It’s a temporary privilege. The window is open from now through June 30, though businesses can choose how long they will participate. And there are conditions. For example, the customer must prove he or she received their shot during the eligibility window. And, even though the practical effect is that a customer receives a free drink, any promotions that advertise a business that participates in this may not use the words “free” or “complimentary.” Businesses can say a drink will be purchased for a vaccinated customer, either by the business or a sponsor not affiliated with the liquor or hospitality industry.
