For the second year in a row, Fourth of July public fireworks displays were cancelled in the Spokane area. But they may return later this summer.Last year the traditional community event at Riverfront Park was called off because of Covid and worries about spreading the virus. This year, organizers planned four regional events where people could stay in their cars and watch but decided it was too dangerous because of last week’s heat wave and the risk of sparking wildfires.
Organizers say they’re using the word ‘postponed’ rather than ‘cancelled.’
“Now that the state is open, we want to celebrate as a community. We want to say thank you to the citizens for being so resilient, for being patient," said Spokane City Parks Director Garrett Jones. He will be one of the people going back to the drawing board to talk about when might be right for fireworks. He says it could be time to go back to one big community event.
“We’re going to be kicking off our Riverfront concert series this summer. We’re going to have 13 concerts. That’s going to bring back a lot of gatherings to the community. So we’re just looking at what that kind of special celebration could be and it could be at multiple locations again, including Riverfront. We’re going to keep that option open," he said.
Those discussions are expected to begin this week.
