Spokane Symphony Picks British Conductor As New Music Director

Jen Owens

The Spokane Symphony today [Tuesday] announced its replacement for departing music director Eckart Preu.

“It’s my great pleasure to announce to all of you the eighth music director of the Spokane Symphony, James Lowe,” said symphony executive director Jeff vom Saal to applause.

Lowe is a British conductor who was chosen over four other finalists. He has conducted orchestras all over the world, including one in Finland where he is currently the chief conductor. He lives in Scotland and, for now, says that won’t change.

“No, I’m not going to be moving here at the moment, but I will be here for just over a third of a year physically in Spokane, which is the same amount I do actually spend at home. So Spokane will very much be a home from home," Lowe said.

Lowe’s first two Spokane concerts will be the 2019-20 season openers in mid-September at the Fox.

He replaces Eckart Preu, who has led the Spokane Symphony for 15 years.
