From the Studio: Composer Harry Stafylakis and Symphony with a Splash

The final interview of the day featured composer Harry Stafylakis, who wrote a piece on tonight's Spokane Symphony concert.  The piece--Arc of Horizon--is one of several works on the orchestra's Autumn Splash concert, which is part of the Symphony with a Splash series. This series pairs contemporary classical music with great masterworks of the past.  Tonight's event starts at 5:00pm with happy hour and jazz guitarist Robert Vaughn.  The symphony goes on at 7:00pm and plays works by Frank Zappa, Harry Stafylakis, and Ludwig van Beethoven.  It's an eclectic mix that is sure to be intriguing. The concert takes place at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.

In the interview Harry talked with Verne about his compositional career, his musical background (which includes his involvement with a metal band), his style, the NYC cultural scene, and more.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
