WA Superintendents, School Boards Want Civility At Board Meetings

The organizations representing Washington school boards and superintendents are tired of rancorous public meetings about mask mandates. The Washington Association of School Administrators and the Washington State School Directors Association today [Thursday] issued a letter, calling for civility between school boards and their patrons.

Joel Aune, the executive director of the school administrators’ group says belligerent community members demanding that school districts rescind state-imposed mask mandates are poisoning the public debate.

“For me, it’s very, very concerning, and frankly, a bit of a head scratcher that school board members and superintendents are taking this kind of intense criticism, let alone threats of violence, when they are simply implementing these legal requirements and they really do not have choice," he said.

Tim Garchow from the school directors’ association says board meetings in least two dozen Washington districts have been recessed because audience members refused to honor mask mandates.
