Zags Play For First National Championship Monday Night

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team will play tonight [Monday] for the national championship. The Bulldogs will try to cap their undefeated season with a win over the Baylor Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

On Saturday night, the Zags won a game that will be remembered for years. It was a tightly-contested 93-90 win in overtime over UCLA that was decided by a last-second shot from almost mid-court by freshman guard Jalen Suggs. The Zags have won all 31 games this season. That was their biggest scare. Now they’re likely facing their toughest opponent. Gonzaga and Baylor have been one-two in the national polls much of the season. They were scheduled to play in December, but the game was cancelled because of Covid concerns.

Now they’ll be on college basketball’s biggest stage. For Gonzaga, it’s the second time in four years that they’ve not only made the Final Four, but also played in the championship game. In 2017, they lost to North Carolina.

This year, Mark Few’s team has its best chance to bring Gonzaga’s first national title back to Spokane. It would be the crowning achievement for Few, who spurned many of the sport’s blue blood programs to build his own blue blood program in eastern Washington.
