Washington House Votes to Name Highway After Tom Foley

The Washington House today (Tuesday) voted for a measure that would name State Highway 395 after the late U.S. House Speaker Tom Foley.

The joint memorial cited Foley’s work to secure nearly $300 million to build and improve the highway. It runs from the Canadian border south to Spokane, follows I-90 west to Ritzville and then south to the Tri-Cities.

Rep. Timm Ormsby (D-Spokane) cited Foley’s political legacy during the debate on the House floor.

“It would be a tribute, not only to him but to his work and the work of bringing civility to government that we name Highway 395 after Mr. Foley and I ask for your support,” Ormsby said.

Foley served Washington’s Fifth Congressional District from 1965 until 1995. He served as speaker for the last six of those years. Foley died in 2013.

This measure now moves to the state Senate.
