Poetry Moment this week looks back to a legendary writer and forward to a book release party via the return of a local legendary event: Pie & Whiskey. Many of the readings center on the work of poet Nance Van Winckel, who passed away in the summer of 2026. Readings are done by writers who have appeared on Pie & Whiskey: Sam Ligon, Laura Read, Kate Lebo, Shawn Vestal and Maya Jewell Zeller. The week's poems anticipate the return to Spokane of Pie & Whiskey in the Washington Cracker Building. That event celebrates the release of Sam Ligon's new novel Miller Cane: A True & Exact History, which first appeared as a serial in The Inlander and on Spokane Public Radio.
