Not only is honor rarely considered central to the relation between faith and reason, many articulations of the ethical life pit the love of honor starkly against the humility needed for genuinely Christian living.
I contend instead that navigating honor is one of the most central daily ways in which we articulate and witness both faith and reason governing our decisions, and that to properly love honor requires faith. A close consideration of both Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice shows that reason alone would prevent those most deserving of honor from properly benefitting those too vicious to recognize their merit. Instead, proper navigation of this honor to benefit one’s community requires faith.
