Amazon announced Thursday that it will open a new Fulfillment Center in Spokane Valley.

The new center will be located at 18007 E. Garland Ave and will process larger orders like pet food, outdoor workout equipment and cleaning supplies, according to a news release.

The center is slated to open later this year and employ 1,000 people. Employees will make $15 an hour with benefits and be eligible for Amazon’s Career Choice program. That program prepays 95% of tuition for high demand careers.

Catie Hydeman, director of N.A.C.F. Non-Sort Operations for Amazon, said the company will begin hiring for a variety of jobs later this year.

Washington State Commerce Secretary Lisa Brown praised Amazon’s decision to start a fulfillment center in Spokane Valley, saying it had a growing and diverse business community and neighborhoods.

“We are pleased by Amazon’s decision to locate a new fulfillment center in Spokane Valley, knowing that this brings the kind of jobs, economic investment and community partnerships that will support residents and businesses in the coming year," she said.

Sen. Mike Padden [R-Spokane Valley], in whose district the new facility will be located, also put out a statement in support of the fulfillment center, saying it will help with job creation and keep the region competitive.

“This is a positive step toward strengthening and maintaining the resilience of our local economy particularly during these unprecedented times,” Padden said.

This will be Amazon's second Fulfillment Center in the area. The first is located at Geiger Boulevard on the West Plains. It employs several thousand workers.
