The latest round of Spokane Arts Grant Award recipients was announced Friday. The list of 12 awardees includes both organizations and individual artists—many of whom are looking to recoup lost revenue in an industry hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’ve been getting a lot more requests for operational support, not only for organizations, but also for individual professional artists, their own businesses as independent contractors," says Spokane Arts Grants Administrator Shelly Wynecoop. "So we wanted to be able to support as many of those types of requests as possible, especially because often the smaller organizations have been kind of left out of these relief efforts. And we wanted to get the money out there as quickly as possible.”
In this second of three award rounds for 2020, a total of $67,000 was awarded with grants ranging from $2800 to $10,000.
Recipients include some familiar arts organizations such as Terrain, Spark Central, and Northwest Bachfest; media organizations including KYRS Community Radio and The Black Lens newspaper; as well as individuals such as glass artist Katie Creyts and jazz musician Rachel Bade-McMurphy, who hosts Spokane Public Radio’s Friday Afternoon Jazz program on KPBX.
