As scientists around the world look for variations of the coronavirus, one of the sources they’re searching is the waste we flush out of our homes and businesses.
Spokane County Interim Health Officer Francisco Velazquez says that may soon become a tool used here too.“We actually are in active conversations with a team of researchers out of WSU that has a proposal and has actually performed some wastewater testing to actively engage in that process on a go-forward basis. I know that they have shared that proposal with the city and county so I think we’re all coming together, I think it’s next week," he said.
Velazquez says none of the three major Covid variants have been discovered yet in Spokane County. One case of the South African variant has been confirmed in King County and 39 cases of the U.K. variant have been found in Washington, all on the west side.
