From the Studio: Spokane String Quartet: Mateusz Wolski, Violin; Cary Boyce, Composer

This weekend is the opening concert for the Spokane String Quartet, featuring works of Beethoven, Haydn, and Cary Boyce.  Mateusz Wolski, violinist in the quartet and concertmaster of the Spokane Symphony, talked with Verne about late Beethoven quartets and the level of skill and understanding needed to perform them.  He also interacted with composer Cary Boyce, whose work for string quartet entitled "Nightshade" will be performed this Sunday, September 27th at 3:00pm at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.

Cary Boyce, who is also the General Manager of Spokane Public Radio, talked about the inspiration for "Nightshade" as well as some other pieces he has composed over the years.  Verne also took him back to his days at Indiana University and the various projects and teaching experiences he had.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
