Studio 360 American Icons: Harley Davidson, Georgia O'Keefe, Jimi Hendrix

It's not the fastest motorcycle or the fanciest, but to many Americans, a motorcycle is a Harley-Davidson. O’Keeffe painted cow and deer skulls floating over delicate abstract landscapes of the New Mexico desert. Hendrix’s performance of the national anthem at Woodstock hit like a shock wave; with its distortion and chaos, it sounded like a rupture in something sacred.

The Rules of Life

What causes Alzheimer’s Disease?  What causes cancers to form?  Can we make jet fuel and plastics out of germs?  To get these answers, scientists are working hard to uncover the rule book that governs every aspect of every living thing on Earth, from the molecular scale to the entirety of Earth’s ecosystems.  The Rules of Life profiles leading American scientists engaged in this quest and explores how their work might crack the code that holds keys to huge questions like: • How to make jet fuel and plastic bags out of E. Coli • How bird calls hold clues to understanding what causes Alzheimer’s disease and cancers to form • How planting an invasive species can actually help farmers by making thousands of bees show up in their fields.

For years they've been exposed to Russian disinformation and slanted state media; and before that Soviet propaganda filtered into the mainstream. We don't know how effective Russian information warfare was in swaying the US election. But we do know how these tactics were developed — over many decades — and what to watch out for in the next election.

Brian is a Spokane native who has been interested in sound technology ever since playing with a reel-to-reel deck as a kid. He learned radio broadcasting on KSFC, before it was part of Spokane Public Radio but still was part of the broadcasting program at Spokane Falls Community College. Brian also studied radio at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon, where he featured new age and fusion jazz on his own show. He admits that at heart he is a news junkie, which fits in well with his work Saturday mornings as regional host for NPR's Morning Edition.
