SPR's Halloween Programming

It's the spookiest time of the year and Spokane Public Radio wants to make sure you have a great Halloween whether you're out trick or treating, or staying in listening to some scary music while handing out the treats.

All Hallows Eve kicks off at 6:30 on October 31st,   with Phyllis Silver's Wacky Witch Halloween Show on The Bookshelf, and then the spooky musical treats continue all night.

The 2019 Retro Cocktail Hour Halloween Spooktacular (7 – 9pm):  Have a finger-snappin', hip-shakin' good time with the annual Retro Cocktail Hour Halloween Spooktacular. It's a ghoulishy groovy brew of monster pop, TV and movie tunes and trailers from cheesy movies.

Calling all ghouls! Also zombies, varmpires, werewolves, mummies and other people in show business. The martinis are spiked with hemlock in the Retro Cocktail Hour's Halloween Spooktacular for 2019. It's a party chockful of swinging songs for the Eve of All Hallows, including tunes like Ghost Train, House of Horrors, Teenage Brain Surgeon and Haunted Hula. We've got a hefty sampling of monster movie and TV music, with themes from The Blob, House on Haunted Hill, The Munsters, The Bat and more, along with trailers for cheesy horror films and "monster pop" from bands like the Jimmy Psycho Experiment, the Tiki Tones and Creepxotica. Plus...Lon Chaney, Jr. sings!

Hollywood Halloween (9 – 10pm): Hollywood Halloween is a scary collection of the best (and darkest) classical film scores, ranging from “Night on Bald Mountain” to the horror classic “Bride of Frankenstein” and its comic cousin “Young Frankenstein.” Join host Lynne Warfel for a musical ride through popular film scores just right for Halloween.

Igor's Halloween Jazz Party (10 – 11pm): Hey! It's Halloween, it's Jazz and it's a party! Join Igor as he presents Halloween Jazz classics from John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Lambert Hendricks & Ross, Jackie McLean, Nina Simone, Philly Joe Jones and others. "Igor's Jazz Party" is a fun and a spooky good time.

Jazz Time's Halloween Jazz Party is hosted by Igor. He spins the music from his master the Doctor's record collection. Good fun and Halloween Jazz music includes the "Theme from The Adams Family," "The Theme from the Munsters," "Dracula," "Frankenstein," "Blues For Dracula," "Halloween Spooks," "The Witches Pit," "Devil May Care," "Prince of Darkness," and much more.

Leona Vander Molen moved to Spokane in 2017 for graduate school and couldn’t bring herself to leave due to the sun, scenery, and community. She grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Denison University for a BA in English and Psychology. Following graduation she moved to Japan for a year as a part of the JET program, and taught as an assistant English teacher on the island of Awaji. She returned to the US to pursue an MFA in creative writing, which she received from Eastern Washington University. While listening to Spokane Public Radio Leona likes to knit, pet her cat, or drive to the nearest bakery for a bagel or five.
