Idahoans Rank High in Charitable Giving

Giving Tuesday

Idahoans on average make less money than their neighbors in Washington and Oregon - but they give away more of their earnings. A survey by the Chronicle of Philanthropy released on Giving Tuesday found Idaho the seventh most giving state in the nation. As of two years ago, Idahoans gave away just over four percent of their income, based on IRS returns.

In neighboring Oregon, by contrast, the rate of giving was only 2.77 percent.

And Washington, home of some of the richest people in the country, was even lower at 2.7 percent. Giving by Microsoft founder Bill Gates did not skew the final tally, because researchers used median, rather than average, figures.

The most generous state in the survey was Idaho's neighbor to the south, Utah, with residents giving ,more than 6-and-a-half percent of their income to charity.

The stingiest? New Hampshire, with a scant 1.74 percent rate of giving to charity.
